The challenges raised by academic self-administration and increasing dependence on third-party funding affect researchers, lecturers and their supporting staff, the academic administration, alike. Constant changes in organization are the norm rather than the exception in a field with peculiar institutional incentives and hierarchical constellations. Conditions prevail that may lead to considerable friction losses.
